3 Causes of an Overheating AC in Durham, NC

June 24, 2022

Summer heat can be unbearable, especially if your air conditioner has to work overtime to keep you cool. Unfortunately, many people in Durham, NC could deal with an overheating air conditioner this season. While there are several possible causes for an overheating AC, these three are the most common.

1. Dirty Air Filter

The air filter’s job is to trap dirt, dust and other particles, so they don’t enter your home through the AC unit. However, the air filter can become clogged with trapped particles over time. When this happens, air cannot flow properly into the AC unit, causing it to overheat.

Check the air filter monthly, and clean or replace it to keep your AC from overheating. Depending on the type of filter, you may be able to clean and reuse it. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends using a filter with a 35-80% dust-spot rating or a MERV of 8-13 to increase its efficiency.

2. Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerant is an essential component of an air conditioner that helps it cool your home. The AC unit will not function properly if there is a leak in the refrigerant lines. As a result, the unit will not provide cool air and eventually fail.

If you suspect your air conditioner has a refrigerant leak, you should have it repaired as soon as possible. Because refrigerant leaks are hazardous, it is best to leave the repair to a professional.

3. Obstructed Airflow

Obstruction of airflow is another common cause of an overheating air conditioner. When the airflow to the AC unit becomes obstructed, the unit has to work harder to cool your home. This can cause the unit to overheat and eventually fail.

A few things can cause obstructed airflow, such as dirty air filters, closed vents, and debris around the AC unit. Ensure the air filters are clean to prevent obstructed airflow from causing your AC to overheat and that nothing is blocking the AC unit.

If you are experiencing any of these issues with your air conditioner, you should contact a professional immediately. Delaying AC repairs can result in additional damage and even higher repair costs. Contact Lee Air conditioning and we will send out one of our technicians with experience and expertise to quickly and efficiently diagnose and repair any problem with your air conditioning system.
